A little trivia. The original proto-rpg games Blackmoor and Chainmail used 6 sided dice. In Europe, Dave Arneson discovered a 20 sided dice at a hobby shop. A d20 is an RPG favorite because it gives equally probable results in 5% increments. However, in the USA they were only readily available as a set of math dice that included a d4, d6, d8, d10 and d12 as well. Rather than discard those extra dice, they were instead incorporated into the original D&D rules.
